Ireland Visa Photo Requirements

Photos are a printed submission, not an upload

Immigration Service Delivery’s application process results in a printed form that is signed and posted or handed in, and the photographs travel with it: they are placed loose in the same envelope as the application form, not stapled or otherwise attached to it [1]. There is no separate step for uploading the photograph as a digital file.

What goes on the back of the photos

Each photo carries the applicant’s name and the visa application or transaction number, written in block capitals on the back — the transaction number is left off for a re-entry visa [1]. Both photos must be identical, showing exactly the same image [1].

Neutral expression, open eyes, and a plain background

The expression must be neutral — no squinting, frowning, smiling or any other expression — with both eyes open and the mouth closed [1]. The background must be plain, in white or light grey, with no shadows or glare in the image or behind the applicant, and good contrast between the facial features and the background [1].

Glasses and head coverings have narrow exceptions

Sunglasses and tinted or coloured glasses are refused outright; where glasses are normally worn, the eyes must remain clearly visible in the photo [1]. A head or hair covering is likewise refused unless it is worn for religious reasons, and even then the face must be clearly visible [1].

The passport photo standard is a different set of rules

Immigration Service Delivery’s printed-photo rule for visas [1] is not the same standard as the Passport Service’s own photo rules for passport applications, which include a digital-upload option [4]. A digital photo file made for a passport application does not satisfy the mailed visa photo requirement, and the two should not be treated as interchangeable [1][4].

Mission checklists can restate the rule in different words

Some Irish missions abroad publish their own visa document checklists that restate this photograph rule in their own wording, and that wording is not always identical to what Immigration Service Delivery states on its own page [1][3].
