Indonesia Visa Photo Requirements

Indonesia runs more than one visa-photo channel, and they don’t share one rulebook

The Directorate General of Immigration publishes a dedicated photo specification for its digital e-Visa upload, covering the file format, pixel dimensions and file size of the image itself. A separate national online system, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handles Official and Diplomatic visa applications and states its own photo rule in its own words. Applicants who submit a paper application at an Indonesian mission abroad instead follow that mission’s own printed application form, and the photo box printed on the form is not standardised across missions or visa categories — a form used for an ordinary visit visa and a form used for an Official/Diplomatic visa print different photo-box sizes. None of these three channels’ rules should be assumed to apply to either of the others.

The digital e-Visa sheet is silent on background colour and on how recent the photo must be

The Directorate General of Immigration’s own dedicated e-Visa photo requirement sheet gives a file format, a minimum pixel size, a maximum file size, and where the head and eyes must fall in the frame — but its own text never states a background colour or a time limit on how recently the photo must have been taken. A regional immigration office’s own visa-application page does state a six-month photo age limit and a rule against editing or digitally altering the photo, but only for five of that office’s seven visa categories (Investor, Repatriasi, Pelajar, Jurnalistik and Penyatuan Keluarga); that same page’s listings for the ordinary Tourist (Wisata) and Business (Bisnis) categories — the closest match to the e-Visa route most applicants use — carry no photo requirements at all, and neither rule appears anywhere in the Directorate General of Immigration’s own e-Visa documents. Neither rule can be treated as a general requirement for the digital e-Visa photo, then. A reader relying only on the flagship e-Visa sheet would not see a background colour, an age limit, or an edited-photo rule stated at all.

Rules from a different visa category or a different mission’s form are easy to over-apply

The requirement against wearing glasses and the requirement for a white background both appear, worded plainly, on paper forms used for the Official/Diplomatic visa category at specific Indonesian missions abroad — not on the Directorate General of Immigration’s digital e-Visa sheet. An applicant preparing an ordinary e-Visa photo should not assume every rule that appears on a mission’s Official/Diplomatic paper form also governs the digital upload, and an applicant preparing a paper application should not assume one mission’s printed form matches another mission’s, since the photo-box size printed on the form has been found to differ between missions and between visa categories.
